METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods of removing gum from concrete depends on the gum’s age and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left recently and it has not penetrated the surface, we are sometimes able to remove it by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping it off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the chewing gum to freeze into a more forgiving substance compared to a gooey and stringy mess. Once the gum is frozen, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper under the gum residue. After that we slide the scraper slowly under the gum and the entire piece should then peel right off the concrete.

The above process is only possible with brand new gum.

When we remove chewing gum that is already black, or is already smashed deep down into the concrete, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat turned up to 200 Degrees in order to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal, we won’t use very high pressure because that could harm the surface of the concrete!
